Who actually decided what a woman's belly should look like?

Someone at some point decided what a woman's belly should look like.
And ever since then, millions of women wake up, look at theirs, and think something is wrong. Flat in the morning, bigger by evening, fine on a relaxed weekend, bloated on a stressful workday with the same food. And no elimination diet has ever explained why.
The answer isn't in the food.
It's in hormones. And that's actually good news because it means the solution isn't where most people are looking for it.
A study published in the journal Obesity found that women with chronically high cortisol carry significantly more fat around the abdomen compared to women with normal cortisol levels, even at the same overall body fat percentage. Cortisol affects not just how much fat you store but where.
Here's what stress does to your body.
Cortisol signals your kidneys to hold onto sodium. Sodium pulls water with it. That's where the bloating and heaviness come from, and it has nothing to do with what or how much you ate. On top of that, stress slows digestion directly. The intestines become less active, food moves more slowly, and gas builds up. That's why your belly looks smaller on calm weekends than on stressful workdays, even when you're eating the same things.
How often do you notice that heavy feeling in your stomach? Stress might be the reason.
How the body resets.
When cortisol drops, the kidneys start releasing the excess sodium and water, digestion activates, and bloating goes down. The most effective way to lower cortisol is training. 10 minutes of exercises that combine core work and deep breathing trigger exactly this process. The diaphragm literally massages the digestive organs with every deep inhale and exhale.
3 simple things that help keep your belly flat throughout the day:
- Enough sleep: even one bad night raises cortisol by 37% the next day
- Regular small meals:skipping meals is stress for your body and raises cortisol too
- Limit caffeine after 2 pm:it amplifies already elevated cortisol and disrupts sleep
Your belly reacts to stress fast. It reacts to calm just as fast.
After the first workout, cortisol starts dropping, your body releases the water it was holding and that bloating eases within a few hours. Open the workout and let's go.
